Silo 2004 Gallery Show #3
Gloria Laposka - Memory Painter
Saturday June 26 - August 22
Reception
Saturday, June 26, 3:00 - 5:00 pm |
 It
is a privilege to be able to show the tremendous wealth of autobiographical paintings,
begun in 1969, by self-taught primitive artist Gloria Laposka. A
contemporary folk artist, Gloria turned to painting after years as a photographer.
She has discovered, art on her own- line, color, composition. She paints
what she remembers of her vivid childhood- the pawnshop where she bought her first camera
for $3, the Fulton Fish Market, Coney Island. Her work has been a private treasure,
but slowly Laposka is becoming a folk sensation. Andre Emmerich, noted New York art
dealer, chose her magnificent This Is
America for the 1996 Stamford Art Association Show out of 750 other works.

There
is universal appeal in her most personal of reflections. The stories told
by each canvas convey a personal secret to each observer, some minutiae that strikes the
individual and makes that memory their own.
